CORA Project

Presented at the 2013 Aquarius/SAC-D Science Team Meeting
The Earth is continously impacted by cosmic-solar radiation but is shielded not uniformly by the manetosphere and atmosphere while the polar regions are more irradiated than equatorial regions. The sun presents periods of minimum and maximum activity in cycles of 11 years; currently we are involved in the maximum period of cycle24. The primary corpuscular radiation (protons, alpha and heavier ions) collisioned with atoms of components of atmosphere producing a cascade of radiation (neutrons, protons, pions, mesons, etc.). Our dosimetry study will be performed in the Antarctic MARAMBIO Base during the summer of 2013, recording the secondary radiation and the NEUTRON and their spectrum using instruments that could detect their range of energies from keV to hundreds of MeV. Preliminary results from January 8 and 18 show two CME detected by SAC-D/Aquarius producing in ground a great increase of NEUTRON dose rate, also other storms were detected in the next months but with low energy. The preleminary annual dose was estimated in 2,16 milliSv with nearly 50% integrate by neutrons. These doses exceeded the annual limit of ICRP recommendation. The CORA Project will complete the dosimetry in the next Antarctic Campagne 2014 in the Marambio base but adding other neutron Instruments placed in the most southern Belgrano Base at 1700 km from Marambio.
