JPL Aquarius-CAP Version 5.0 Dataset Released
[02-Oct-18] The Physical Oceanography Distributed Active Archive Center (PO.DAAC) is pleased to announce the availability of new Level-2 and 3 datasets from the Combined Active-Passive (CAP) Algorithm applied to the version 5.0, end of mission Aquarius/SAC-D data. The CAP datasets are developed and produced by a principal investigator led team at JPL. L3 mapped products include both 7-day rolling average and monthly CAP sea surface salinity (SSS), rain corrected SSS and wind speed datasets. The CAP algorithm simultaneously retrieves salinity, wind speed and wind direction by minimizing the sum of squared differences between model and observations. The main improvements in CAP V5.0 relative to the previous version include: updates to the Geophysical Model Functions to 4th order harmonics with the inclusion of sea surface temperature (SST) and stability at air-sea interface effects; use of the Canadian Meteorological Center (CMC) SST product as the new source ancillary sea surface temperature data in place of NOAA OI SST. The V5.0 datasets are processed for the entire duration of the Aquarius/SAC-D mission: 8/26/2011 - 6/7/2015. All users are encouraged to work with V5.0 over any prior CAP versions.
The V5.0 CAP datasets are described and discoverable via the PO.DAAC data portal. Access to these datasets is via PO.DAAC's public FTP site (Level 2 and Level 3 mapped) but preferentially via PO.DAAC Drive (Level 2 and Level 3 mapped) going forward given deprecation of PO.DAAC's public FTP site. The datasets are also accessible via OPeNDAP (Level 2 and Level 3 mapped), THREDDS and LAS. The CAP V5.0 ATBD & Users Guide is available online from PO.DAAC together with associated reader software. General information regarding Aquarius/SAC-D mission is available from the mission website and via PO.DAAC's Aquarius and salinity webpages.
